Scholz noted that his goal as federal chancellor is to explain his policy and that “from now on, this must also be done” on Twitter.

Olaf Scholz, two months after being sworn in as Germany’s new chancellor, this Sunday created a new  Twitter profile apart from his existing personal account, becoming the first German chancellor with an official account on this social network.

In his first tweet , Scholz congratulated newly re -elected German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who is also a Social Democrat.

“Frank-Walter Steinmeier guided the citizens in difficult times and passionately held the highest office in the State. I am glad that he continues to do so. Congratulations, dear Federal President!” Scholz wrote, after which he added a comment that reads ” Hello, Twitter! “

The federal chancellor pointed out that he took office with the aim of explaining his policy and that, “from now on, this must also be done ” on Twitter, “at least as far as the 280 characters allow.”

The senior official also thanked the more than 70,000 people who have followed him on his new account in just a few hours.  

Scholz’s predecessor, Angela Merkel, never used this social network. The official tweets were in the hands of her spokesperson, Steffen Seibert.
