The oldest living resident of the town to date passed away in 2015 at the age of 108, while the oldest living resident will be 104 in March.

Two residents of a remote mountain village on the Italian island of Sardinia, Vittorio Lai, who turned 100 last Saturday, and Piuccia Lai, who will also become a centenarian next week, made their small homeland break a world record for longevity. by raising to ten the number of people with more than a century of life in the town, with a population of only 1,765 inhabitants , local media report.

Sardinia is among the five regions in the world with the highest concentration of centenarians . 534 people who are 100 years old or older live on the island, which is equivalent to 33.6 per 100,000 inhabitants, according to The Guardian.

In turn, the town of Perdasdefogu, which can only be accessed by a narrow and winding road, is an emblematic place due to its high number of centenarian residents, which is 16 times higher than the national average .

“The presence of ten centenarians confirms the exceptional longevity of the inhabitants of Perdasdefogu,” says Luisa Salaris, professor of demography at the University of Cagliari.

The oldest registered inhabitant of the town to date is Consolata Melis, who died in 2015 at 108 years of age. Currently, the oldest living resident of Perdasdefogu is Antonio Brundu, who will be 104 years old in March.

Several scientists studied the remote village and pointed to different factors to explain the unique longevity of its inhabitants, including  clean air, an active lifestyle and a diet rich in raw vegetables.
