Mexico City.- An alleged leader of the criminal organization of the Gulf Cartel (CDG) was detained by federal agents in the state of Nuevo León, northern Mexico, the Tamaulipas State Attorney General’s Office reported on Tuesday.
In a statement, the Prosecutor’s Office recalled that in April 2019 the Public Ministry obtained an arrest warrant against Evaristo “C” alias el Vaquero, who is identified as the leader of the aforementioned criminal organization, for the crime of aggravated kidnapping.
“This day it was learned that the Vaquero was detained by federal agents in the state of Nuevo León, for which coordination actions will be carried out to bring him before the Tamaulipas justice,” the note said.
According to sources, the arrest occurred in the municipality of Salinas Victoria, where the alleged criminal would meet drug traffickers from the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG).
The Prosecutor’s Office itself indicated that the subject, whom local media identified as Evaristo Cruz Sánchez, was one of the ten most sought targets.
He recalled that the detainee “was part of the priority objectives of detention” of the Binational Border Security and Prosperity Campaign that the Government of Tamaulipas undertook together with United States Security agencies, and also had a reward offer of $ 100,000 to achieve their location and detention.
The authorities indicated that against the criminal organization they have seized four buildings and 72 vehicles, eight cargo trucks, 18 horses and exotic animals, all allegedly owned by the now detainee.
The CDG and the Northeast Cartel (CDN) have been in a dispute for control of the northeastern states of Mexico since March 2010, a conflict that has caused more than 15,000 disappearances and thousands of deaths since that date.
