Istanbul, 23 Feb. A magnitude 5 aftershock caused panic this Thursday in the city of Antioquia, the most affected by the earthquakes of February 6 and last Monday, although it did not cause major damage.
The quake struck at 1553 GMT, with its epicenter at Baliklidere, just five kilometers south of Antioch, the capital of Hatay province, according to data from the Kandilli Seismograph Observatory in Istanbul.
The shock has caused panic among those who continue to live in tents in this city, almost completely destroyed by the earthquakes of the 6th, which killed more than 43,000 people in ten provinces of the country, reports the NTV channel.
But as the governor of the province, Rahmi Dogan, told the Turkish Anadolu agency, the earthquake caused almost no new damage in a city where no houses are currently inhabited.
“Apart from the collapse of some already damaged buildings, nothing serious has happened. According to initial reports, there are no injuries and no one has been left under the rubble,” he said. Dogan said.
Antioquia, which was already the city with the highest level of destruction due to the 7.7 and 7.6 magnitude earthquakes of February 6, as it was located just above a geological fault, suffered on Monday last a new independent earthquake, according to experts, of magnitude 6.4, with an aftershock of 5.8.
This quake left six people dead, including three people trying to salvage property from damaged houses, and more than a hundred injured, 18 of them seriously.
