At least 27 people, including several high school students, died in the accident of a bus transporting pilgrims on the island indonesia from Java, authorities announced Thursday.

Throughout the night, with the help of cranes, the rescuers extracted the survivors of this bus that fell on Wednesday night in a ravine of Sumedang, a region of western Java.

The bus, with 66 people on board, was traveling on a winding and poorly lit road when it fell into a 20-meter ravine, authorities say, saying there are 39 survivors.

The victims included children, adults and the driver, Mamang Fatmono, head of the Bandung rescue teams, told AFP.

An investigation has been opened to determine the causes of the accident.

The passengers were returning to the city of Subang after having made a religious pilgrimage in West Java.

Tragedies are frequent on the archipelago’s roads, due to the old vehicles and infrastructures, but also to the fact that drivers do not respect the traffic code.
