Thousands of peasants marched on Thursday to demand the resignation of Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei.

The argument of the protest was that during the worst months of the pandemic and currently there are acts of corruption in the government and they are not investigated.

Four marches started in different parts of Guatemala City and gathered in the Plaza de la Constitución in front of the Government Palace. “We are human, we feel what the governments of the day do. In Congress there are thieving and corrupt deputies. The town is starving, ”the peasants shouted.

The Campesino Development Committee (CODECA) was the organization that called the protests. Peasants from different departments were present, but some could not reach Guatemala City because the National Civil Police (PNC) did not allow the entry of buses.

During the first year of his tenure, Giammattei created the Presidential Commission Against Corruption, but it does not investigate cases of possible corruption involving officials close to the president. The peasants rejected this situation and requested the resignation of the Attorney General of the Public Ministry, Consuelo Porras.

They announced that the demonstrations will continue next week.
