Guadalajara (Mexico), February 18. – Serbian-Spanish coach Veljko Paunovic’s Chivas de Guadalajara continued their upward trend in Mexican football’s Clausura, beating Pumas UNAM 2-1 at their home stadium on Saturday.

Daniel Ríos and Carlos Cisneros converted for Guadalajara, opportunely given the defensive lapses of the university students, who thwarted with a goal from the Argentinian Juan Ignacio Dinenno.

Chivas took the lead with a header from Ríos in the 6th minute from a pass from Roberto Alvarado and decided the victory in the 33rd minute with a header from Cisneros, who took advantage of the bad mark, from a corner.

For the second half, the home side squandered several attacking opportunities until in 1976 Dinenno scored his sex goal of the year, on a pass from Pablo Monroy.

The Pumas fought back but Chivas held up well in defense and stopped the home side, who suffered Brazilian Diogo de Oliveira to be sent off at the last minute.

Guadalajara added three points that lifted the team to fourth place in the standings with four wins, three draws, one loss and 15 points, six less than Monterrey, who beat Necaxa 2-1 on Saturday.

Argentines Rogelio Funes Mori and Germán Berterame scored for Monterrey, who have won seven in a row, and Spaniard Edgar Méndez was reduced for Necaxa.

Monterrey have seven wins, one loss and 21 points, two more than Tigres UANL, who won 1-0 at Atlas.

Argentinian Nicolás Ibáñez converted the goal with which the Tigres secured the victory, in an alternating dominance duel in which both teams squandered goalscoring opportunities.

In Saturday’s other game, Argentina’s Lucas González saved Santos Laguna’s 1-1 draw at San Luis, who had taken the lead thanks to a goal from Germany’s naturalized Argentinian Mateo Klimowicz.

Matchday 8 began on Friday, when Cruz Azul ended their run of poor results by beating Puebla 1-3, and León drew 0-0 at Juárez FC.

This Saturday, the Pumas UNAM will receive the Chivas de Guadalajara of the Serbian-Spanish coach Veljko Paunovic and on Sunday they will face Querétaro-Mazatlán, América-Tijuana and Pachuca-Toluca.
