The insulares begin this week with the aim of achieving an unprecedented streak during this course, and that is already far in the retina of the fans of Gran Canaria, as is the chain of three league victories in a row, something that has not happened since the end of 2019, when players of the stature of Pedri, Viera or Juanjo Narváez were still on the team.

What seemed like a difficult start to 2021 for UD Las Palmas, facing great rivals such as Espanyol, Mallorca and Leganés, can become quite a mental and statistical shock for the entity to have this in the palm of the hand weekend, with the visit of the pepineros, the possibility of achieving victory for the third consecutive day. Mel’s men have not achieved it since the 2019/2020 season, when they repeated it twice, in this case, linking four consecutive wins. First, from matchday 8, with the victory over Albacete (3-2), Ponferradina (0-2), Lugo (0-2), to matchday 11 against Deportivo (3-0); and later from 17, against Oviedo (3-1), Extremadura (0-1), Numancia (3-1), until 20 in Elche (2-3), this clash being the last that Jonathan Viera would dispute with the island team before returning to China.

From then on, and throughout 2020, the maximum that UD reached was to chain two victories, such as those harvested against Almería (0-1) and Lugo (1-0) on matchdays 33 and 34 of last season and this season on matchdays 6 and 7, precisely, also against Almería (2-0) and Castellón (2-1) at the Gran Canaria Stadium, before succumbing abruptly to Cartagena (3-0).

Now, with the arrival of 2021, a new opportunity opens to break this barrier once again, to continue climbing positions in order to look towards the playoff, adding the possibility, in addition, of leaving a clean sheet for the first time for the third consecutive day.
