Geneva, 15 Feb. At least 11 migrants have died and more than 60 are missing after the ship they were traveling on sank off the coast of Libya, the United Nations International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported today.

The ship, which left Qasr Alkayar for Europe on Tuesday, was carrying some 80 people, seven of whom managed to swim to Libyan shores “in extreme conditions” and are currently hospitalized, the organization said.

The Libyan Red Cross and local police have recovered eleven bodies, IOM said, which said that with this tragedy the death toll on the central Mediterranean route, one of the most dangerous, exceeds 130 .

In 2022, the organization recorded 1,450 deaths on this route, which from Libya and other Maghreb countries is mainly destined for Italy and Malta. EFE
