The document released Tuesday warns of a “diverse range” of global threats that could further destabilize a world shaken by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, technological change and international competition.

The 2021 Annual Threat Assessment is a 27-page unclassified document that describes the collective vision of the 18 intelligence agencies of the northern country.

The only reference to Cuba in this document is indirect, since the island is mentioned only as a “support” for Venezuela, the latter, a nation that does raise concerns within the United States due to its alliances with Russia.

The report states that “the potential for cascading events in an increasingly interconnected and mobile world” would create new and unique challenges, as known adversaries continue the struggle to gain greater influence.

This document expresses that China, Russia, Iran and North Korea would seek to challenge the interests of the United States in different settings and on multiple levels.

And it further adds that “transnational crime, cyber attacks and terrorist conspiracies pose continuous threats.” He also dedicated a section to domestic extremists, whom he described as a “high threat”.

The COVID-19 pandemic, according to the assessment, “will continue to put pressure on governments and societies, fueling humanitarian and economic crises, political unrest and geopolitical competition”, even after the widespread administration of vaccines.

“The economic consequences of the pandemic are likely to grow or worsen instability in at least some countries as people despair in the face of intertwined pressures including sustained economic recessions, job losses and disrupted supply chains. The report said.

Intelligence officials said Beijing viewed its competition with the United States as part of a “geopolitical epochal shift” and that it would continue to accumulate military, economic and technological prowess to preserve the influence of the Chinese Communist Party.
