Cuba confirmed 567 new infections of covid-19 and 3 deaths in the last 24 hours, amid the worst wave of the disease, which so far in January has broken a record with a Accumulated of 9,772 confirmed patients, according to the balance of this Monday of the Ministry of Public Health.
With a slight decrease compared to the 634 positives confirmed the day before, the majority of the new patients are 542 autochthonous cases, marking an increasing trend in recent weeks.
Cases with a source of infection abroad show a downward trend, with 25 registered the day before, while in 31 the origin of the infection was investigated and 511 (90.1%) were contacts of confirmed cases.
As of today, 9,811 people are admitted to Cuban hospitals and 4,557 of them are active covid patients, of which 19 are reported in critical condition and 32 serious, including a Venezuelan citizen.
With the 3 new deaths, there are 197 deaths since the start of the pandemic on the island, 51 of them reported this January, the highest number in a month since the 57 reported in April 2020.
The head of Epidemiology of the Minsap, Francisco Durán, insisted in his daily appearance on the circulation of the coronavirus in calling to comply with “more rigor” the hygienic sanitary measures arranged to contain the strong rebound of the disease that since the last month and a half affects to the Caribbean country.
Havana fell back on January 12 to “phase zero” or “limited autochthonous transmission” and continues with the highest record of daily infections with 169 positive cases diagnosed yesterday.
The capital province – the most populated in Cuba – has an incidence rate of 190.42 confirmed cases per 100,000 inhabitants, the highest in the country in the last two weeks.
It is followed by the eastern provinces of Santiago de Cuba (115 new infections) and Guantánamo (79), and the western Pinar del Río (49).
Cuba accumulates to this date 21,828 people diagnosed with the coronavirus from the performance of more than 1.7 million PCR tests, 15,152 analyzed last day.
Cuba is preparing four vaccine candidates for covid-19, but at the moment they are in an intermediate phase of clinical trials and the State has not acquired doses in the international market.
Cuban health authorities announced last week that they expect to produce up to 100 million doses of their indigenous Soberana-02 vaccine in the coming months, which would cover the immunization of the entire Cuban population (11.2 million).
