“Creed III” was the top-grossing film this weekend in the United States, replacing “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and exceeding both expectations and the results of the first two episodes of this series.

“Creed III” grossed $58 million when it opened in 4,007 theaters in North America, according to estimates released Sunday. Analysts had calculated that it would raise around 30 million. The first “Creed” debuted with 29 million in 2015 and “Creed II” debuted with 35 million in 2018.

Michael B. Jordan made his directorial debut with “Creed III” in which Adonis battles childhood friend Dame with Jonathan Majors. This is the first Rocky or Creed release to not feature a performance by Sylvester Stallone.

It was the most expensive of all the “Creed” films, as its production budget was around $75 million, compared to previous ones which were $35 and $50 million.

“Ant-Man 3” was by far the second, in its third weekend in theaters.

“Cocaine Bear” was in third place with $11 million in its second weekend in theaters, for a domestic total of $41.3 million.

Fourth, “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – To The Swordsmith Village” with $10.1 million.

“Jesus Revolution” came fifth with 8.7 million. The film, starring Kelsey Grammer, was theatrically released over two weekends with a total of $30.5 million, despite its production budget of $15 million. —- Lindsey Bahr on Twitter: www.twitter.com/ldbahr.
