Uwe Dorendorf has been a member of the Lower Saxony state parliament for the CDU since 2017. He rarely appears there – but more often on a social media platform.

Hanover – The CDU member of parliament Uwe Dorendorf causes a stir on the social media platform Tiktok with curious videos and has already collected more than 120,000 followers. In the short videos, he often makes fun of Green politicians, for example he pretends to run away from a Green voter and says in front of a Green election poster: “Whoever changes has lost control of his life.” His videos sometimes have several million views on the platform.

He can understand allegations of populism, but he justifies himself: “In order to get reach on Tiktok, you have to provoke a bit, make fun of yourself and others and make everything a little funnier,” says Dorendorf of the German Press Agency in Hanover. “Young people can only be reached via social media and especially via Tiktok.” Many wouldn’t understand that, he said. “We’re just copying certain things that have been running successfully on Tiktok around the world.”

The CDU politician has had the Greens on his back for a long time. Almost a year ago he posted a video from the state parliament in which he danced and above it was written: “Better a house in the countryside than a green one in the house.” According to his own statements, the idea for the Tiktok account did not come from himself, but from a former intern. The self-employed insurance specialist has been a member of the state parliament since 2017.
