However, it should be remembered that in Mexico the re-election figure has not been accepted since the publication of the 1917 constitution, after the convulsive period of the Mexican Revolution reverse the Porfirio Diazwho remained in power for nearly 30 years.

This is provided for in Article 83 of the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States and says the following:

“The president will begin to exercise his functions on the 1st. October and will last six years. The citizen having exercised the function of President of the Republicelected by the people, or having the character of interim or substitute, or temporarily assume the property of the Federal Executive, Under no circumstances and under no pretext will he be able to exercise this function again.

However, the article has been amended several times. The first was in 1927 with which re-election was again possible, although that person had to wait for a presidential term to become a candidate again.

It was an attempt by the former president Alvaro Obregonwho had governed from 1920 to 1924, to come back to power in view of the political crisis in which the regime of his successor found himself, Plutarch Elias Calles. However, it cost him his life, because he was assassinated shortly afterwards.

In 1928 this was removed from Article 83 leaving “he can never be re-elected for an immediate term” and it was not until 1933 that it was reformed once more and removed the possibility:

“The citizen who has held the office of President of the Republic, elected by universal suffrage, or having the character of interim, provisional or substitute, Under no circumstances and under no pretext will he be able to exercise this function again.

Constitution 83 would undergo two further amendments in 2012 and 2014 but referring to who will not be able to assume the office of president and the day they begin their term.

It was April 2022 when López Obrador said in his morning conference that he was not seeking re-election through the revocation process or extending his presidential term.

“I always have great love for the Mexican people for all of you, for all of you, I don’t hate. That’s why I’m happy and that’s why I’m going to continue serving until the last day of my mandate, I will not pass
