At least three Palestinians were killed Thursday, Palestinian officials said, after Israeli security forces attacked a town in the northern occupied West Bank.

The Israeli military had no immediate comment on the raid on Khaba, south of the troubled city of Jenin. The Palestinian Health Ministry did not identify the dead, although it said they were killed by Israeli fire during a military operation.

In recent months, Jaba has seen the formation of a group of disenchanted young Palestinians who have taken up arms against the indefinite Israeli occupation, which began 56 years ago. The group is part of a wider trend of new armed groups in the West Bank that have challenged the increasingly unpopular Palestinian Authority and claim they have no ties to any particular political party.

The last two months have been marked by an upsurge in violence in the West Bank.
