At least 11 people were killed Tuesday in a shooting at a school in Kazan, a city in central Russia, the press agencies Interfax and Ria Novosti reported, adding that an alleged assailant, a teenager, was arrested.

According to international media, two children descended an emergency staircase from the third floor of School Number 175 while the shots rang out, in a video filmed by a witness.

A young man was pinned to the ground outside the school building by a police officer. In addition, emergency service vehicles arrived at the school.

According to the emergency services cited by the Interfax agency, at least eight students and a teacher have lost their lives in the attack.

One of the perpetrators of the shooting was apparently killed by security forces, and the other was arrested, announced on Tuesday the Russian press agencies.

“The second aggressor who attacked the school in Kazan and who had barricaded himself in the building was killed,” a source from the security forces told the TASS agency. An anonymous source cited by Interfax confirmed this information.

Authorities said additional security measures have been put in place at all schools in Kazan, the capital of Russia’s Tatarstan region, approximately 692 kilometers from Moscow.
