Alejandro Gaviria invited to rebel, despite the risks

Alejandro Gaviria served as education Minister since the arrival of Gustavo Petro as President of the Republic in August 2022 until February 27, 2023. Gaviria’s departure from the portfolio was controversial, since without notice President Petro dismissed him for his services and named him in the I load Aurora Vergara.

In the more than two-minute clip, Alejandro Gaviria is seen several times during his tenure as minister, traveling the country and visiting schools. Also, it is accompanied by a message addressed to the students of the country and in which he calls to be better students and to come out of the average, even if it may involve some risk.

But the speech, very well chosen for Alejandro Gaviria’s farewell video, also seems to address the President PetroSince his departure, there has been talk of a strained relationship between the president and the former minister due to their positions against Petro’s ideas, such as health reform.

“The best, like those who rebel against mediocrity, like those, if you will, who decide to go against it, the opposite of the average. Doing that, rebelling against mediocrity, standing out, if you like, always involves risks, you easily hide in the average”.

Since the beginning of the government of Gustavo Petro, one of its flags has been peace, therefore, in the video, another of the messages that appears is the importance between the union of peace and education.

“Education and peace are one and the same project. Our vision of education is based on education as a right, as an instrument of peace and reconciliation, as a factor of regional development and as a democratizer of culture”.

The video ends with a personal message from Alejandro Gaviria and the importance of education in social change and building as a society in the country.

“Social change. It’s always been my vision, it’s incremental, it’s built day by day, step by step and it’s something collective. Education is not something you give passively to society, it is something that communities build every day”.

After Gustavo Petro’s surprise announcement regarding the departure of Alejandro Gaviria from the Ministry of Education, the version began to spread on social networks and the media that it was due to a letter of suggestions and differences with the health reform sent to him. This was revealed by the journalist Daniel Coronell through a video on his Facebook page From @DanielCoronellPeriodin which he assured that the tensions between Petro and Gaviria began at the start of the government, including other members of the cabinet, who had already been ministers in other governments, were surprised by the way Gaviria stood addressed to the President of the Republic.

According to Daniel Coronell, the relationship between Petro and Gaviria has been tense since one of the first councils of ministers during which the president gave as an example the differences that have arisen in the management of the covid-19 pandemic between certain regions of Italy.

“President Petro had exposed how something had been managed in the north and in the south and Alejandro Gaviria told him, in front of his colleagues: ‘hey, it’s not true, science has re-evaluated this’”, declared Daniel Coronell .
