Just hours before it’s officially filled the first year of the Russian invasion on Ukrainian territory, the G7 Ambassadors in Argentina supported Ukraine and demanded the cessation of aggression by the country led by Vladimir Poutine. This was made known this Thursday by the representatives on the national territory of Japan, Italy, Canada, France, United States, United Kingdom, Germany and European Unionthrough an official statement issued by the Japanese diplomat Hiroshi Yamauchi.

“It is Friday, February 24, 2023 A year has passed since the unprovoked and unjustifiable invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation,” the text reads at the beginning. Then, he details: “As G7 ambassadors accredited to Argentina (Japan, Italy, Canada, France, United States, United Kingdom, Germany and European Union), we want reaffirm Argentine public opinion that Russia’s war of aggression threatens not only Ukraine, but also the Charter of the United Nations and its principles. As such, it is peace, security and stability it concerns us all. If this fact is not addressed, the unlawful aggression would be acquitted and the risk of other countries facing similar aggression would increase,” they warned.

The statement – titled “One year after Russia’s large-scale unprovoked war of aggression, the G7 is more united than ever for Ukraine” – also underlined the role of Argentina over the past twelve months. “We wish to recognize the constructive role that Argentina has played as President of the United Nations Human Rights Council in 2022,” they said and then detailed: “G7 members and like-minded countries , like Argentina, not only responded with help, but we also provided refuge to the victims of the Russian invasion.

Looking to the future, the group of diplomats announced that the G7 members had promised to “provide Ukraine assistance financial, military, humanitarian and development”, with the aim of maintaining “strong solidarity to mitigate the effects of the invasion”.

In the official text made public by the Japanese diplomat, it was also expected that the G7 will continue to “impose punishments against the Russian Federation against persons and entities, inside and outside Russia, who provide political or economic support to Russia’s illegal attempts to change the status of Ukrainian territory” .

Through the press release, the representatives of the G7 in Argentina also denounced disinformation campaigns by the Russian Federation. In turn, they urged all countries that support the rules-based institutional order to demand that the Russian Federation put an end to this aggression, which they called a flagrant violation of international law. “The Russian Federation must also be held responsible for violations of international humanitarian and human rights law,” they stressed.

“On the eve of a year after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the G7 ambassadors issued a press release in which we strongly condemn the invasion which is a violation of international law,” said Yamauchi Hiroshi via his official Twitter account when releasing the official statement.
