A piece of paper detailing the state of health of a person with cancer hidden in the leg of a chair and discovered by the carabinieri is one of the elements that led to the arrest of Matteo Messina Denaro, considered the last godfather of Cosa Nostra, detained on January 16 after 30 years on the run from justice.
The discovery took place at the home of Rosalía, sister of Messina Denaro and known as Rosetta, 68, arrested today by the carabinieri in Castelvetrano (Sicily, south) for mafia association on the orders of prosecutors Maurizio de Lucia and Paolo Guido, who led the investigations that also led to the arrest of the “boss of bosses” of Cosa Nostra.
The piece of paper was discovered by carabinieri on December 6 while placing hidden microphones in the woman’s house in Castelvetrano, the family’s historic residence, Italian media reported.
The army found a note inside the hollow leg of a chair, photographed it and put it back in its place, so as not to arouse the woman’s suspicions, and later investigators discovered that it was an actual clinical diary of a cancer patient. , the same from which Messina Denaro suffered, as we learned after his arrest.
This piece of paper became proof that Rosalía was aware of her brother’s conditions and was responsible for communicating it to the rest of the Mafia family members.
“This shows that the fugitive had informed her, step by step, of the discovery of the disease and of all the subsequent surgeries, having probably had several opportunities to meet him personally and ascertain his state of health”, explain the prosecutors. .
Rosalía is the eldest of five Messina Denaro siblings, and investigators believe her to be the person who managed the family’s money and managed the mob boss’s communication network.
Until now, she had never been directly involved in the investigations, but her husband, Filippo Guttadauro, had always been considered one of the most reliable men of the “capo”.
His son Francesco, considered Matteo Messina Denaro’s favorite nephew, arrested in 2013 with the capo’s younger sister, Anna Patrizia, is also in custody, while Rosalía’s other daughter is Lorenza Guttadauro, currently the lawyer appointed by the mafia boss for his defense. .
The investigations point to Rosalía as the person in charge of managing the family funds, covering the economic needs of his brother during the 30 years on the run, as well as the transmission network of the “pizzini”, the small pieces of paper with which the gangsters communicate their orders to the rest of the Mafia family members and that they allow Messina Denaro to continue issuing orders from hiding.
