For a long time, YouTubers who used curses in their videos had to live with the risk of not being able to monetize their videos. Now the world’s largest video platform has adjusted its guidelines in this regard.
How much can you swear?
YouTube defines exactly when, how hard and how often you can swear. While so far only light swear words like “hell” and “damn” were allowed in monetized videos, content creators can now fall back on harder words.
Statements such as “sh-t” or “bit-h” are now allowed in the first 30 seconds. After that, even harsher words like “fu-k” are allowed, as long as you don’t overdo it.
What else is allowed? In the future, YouTube will also allow the representation of violent interactions with law enforcement officers, drugs or sensitive events, as long as the respective videos are news, documentaries or visual works.
Adult topics are also allowed in the future as long as they are treated in a humorous way. These include dating jokes, for example.
What remains forbidden? Content that has to do with firearms, shows dangerous actions or otherwise depicts adult topics, on the other hand, can still not be monetized.
Other changes to YouTube
It was also recently announced that YouTube is planning even more changes. For example, you don’t want to make the number of dislikes of videos publicly visible in the future. The aim is to prevent any review bombing of the videos on the platform.
However, the plan has met with criticism from users. A frequently mentioned argument is that the users can use the dislikes to see how trustworthy the respective video is.
