AI Song, a new feature tested by TikTok, can generate songs from texts and is gradually being made available to some users; check out how it works
TikTok is testing AI Song, a generative artificial intelligence (AI) element in the app that can generate original music to accompany videos produced on the social network. The tool works using a basic text command process to generate songs. As it is not yet complete, several content producers with access to AI Song have reported that the songs created are not so good and still need some improvement. Here’s everything you know so far about the new feature.
According to TikTok itself, “AI Song is an experimental feature of TikTok that uses AI to create songs based on the instructions you enter”. In other words, it’s still in the experimental phase and may (or may not) improve before it’s available to everyone.
The company also notes that the lyrics of the songs generated using the tool are developed by Bloom, a language model with more than 50 languages. The Bloom dataset contains more than 176 billion parameters. Therefore, there should be a greater variety of lyrical options that generate diverse results.
AI Song can be very useful for creating videos with a specific song on a certain theme, and the creator will be sure that it is copyright-free. This can make it easier to create fun songs as a form of humor, whether you’re dubbing the new song or just promoting it.
How the AI Song tool works
For accounts on which the new feature is available, simply go to the space for choosing music for your video and tap AI Song. The screen will look like the image below. Simply type in the prompt (what you want in the song) and generate the new sound. One tip is to be very specific in the prompt so that the AI-generated song is as close as possible to what you want. It’s important to note that the feature is designed to be used for fun, not to try and create a perfect song.
The generated lyrics are combined with music from a pre-sorted catalog created in TikTok, and you can change the vibe by switching between “pop”, “EDM” and “HipHop”. According to the video made by content creator @jonahcruzmanzano, the app emphasizes that “there are rules that must be followed” when using AI Song. For example, the tool cannot be used to exploit or harm minors, or spread false information. The same goes for defaming, impersonating or harassing other people.
TikTok is not the only company developing artificial intelligence for music creation. Google is testing new generative AI features for YouTube that will allow people to create music tracks using just a text prompt – similar to AI Song – or a simple hummed melody. Called Dream Track, the service is designed to automatically generate short 30-second music tracks in the style of famous artists. The feature can imitate nine different artists, who chose to collaborate with YouTube in developing the tool.
