Motorola wants to go further on the subject of wireless charging for smartphones by offering over-the-air (OTA) wireless charging.
Smartphones, however advanced they may be, still have a number of areas for improvement. One of them is, of course, their battery. While waiting for real significant innovations, manufacturers are betting on recharging. And wireless charging in particular. Motorola wants to go further on this point, by offering over-the-air (OTA) wireless charging.
Motorola steps up on OTA wireless charging
A few months ago, a video surfaced. A Motorola video showing “real” wireless charging technology. Wireless charging, strictly speaking, is nothing new but what makes this system interesting is that there is no need to put the device on a dedicated charging mat to enjoy it. The device is simply recharged, as soon as it is within range of the charging station, so to speak.
When in our smartphones?
Since this video, we had not heard from this project any more but Motorola recently announced that it will work with GuRu Wireless to develop the first OTA wireless charging technology, a technology that could quickly find its place in our smartphones. For those who do not know, the concept of wireless OTA charging has been mentioned for some time but never in any applications or consumer products.
In the event that Motorola and GuRu Wireless get their way, this could be a big step forward. That being said, Motorola smartphones have not really been popular lately. Does the brand plan to sell, under license, its future technology to other smartphone manufacturers? Will she prefer to keep the exclusivity to boost sales? Hard to say. The future will tell.
No one currently knows when we will be able to see the first devices compatible with such OTA wireless charging technology. Last I heard, other big names in the industry, such as Xiaomi and Oppo, were also working on similar technologies.
