U.S.- John McAfee, creator of the antivirus of the same name, has been indicted in a federal court in the United States for crimes of fraud and money laundering, derived from the fraudulent promotion of cryptocurrency investors.

McAfee and his bodyguard Jimmy Gale Watson Jr were charged with a plot to exploit McAfee’s large Twitter following by publicly promoting cryptocurrency and digital token offerings that they then sold once prices rose in promotions.

McAfee is being held in Spain on separate criminal charges brought by the Department of Justice’s tax division, the department said. Watson, an executive adviser to McAfee’s so-called cryptocurrency team, was arrested Thursday night, the Justice Department said. Neither man could be immediately reached for comment.
