Aiming to increase its capacity in AI-assisted software, AMD has announced the acquisition of Nod.ai. Founded in 2013, the California-based company specializes in developing artificial intelligence and machine learning systems. The value of the operation was not disclosed.

“Thanks to the agreement with Nod.AI, our company will be able to capitalize on the huge demand for generative AI technologies. Nod.AI tools will provide AMD customers with development tools, unique machine learning libraries and models,” said Vamsi Boppana, senior vice president of AMD’s Artificial Intelligence Group in a statement.

With this acquisition, AMD intends to guarantee leaps in performance for servers and data centers, also improving the performance of the Instinct accelerator line and even Ryzen processors in AI-related applications. These developments could have an impact on products aimed at companies and the end consumer, as well as making the rivalry with NVIDIA, which has long stood out in the segment, more even.

Anush Elangovan, co-founder and CEO, Nod.ai, says that the company is made up of a team of engineers focused on solving problems and moving forward at a fast pace in an ever-changing industry to develop solutions for the next set of problems.

“Our journey as a company has cemented our role as the primary maintainer and main contributor to some of the world’s most important AI repositories, including SHARK, Torch-MLIR and OpenXLA/IREE code generation technology. By joining forces with AMD, we will bring this knowledge to a wider range of customers on a global scale,” he adds.

AMD will integrate the entire Nod.ai team into its AI division, created this year. To date, more than 1,500 engineers – the vast majority in software – are involved with this division. AMD plans to continue expanding its team with 300 additional hires this year and others in 2024.
