The San Francisco 49ers visited the Los Angeles Rams for their last game of the 2021 regular season and in hopes of advancing to the postseason. San Francisco achieved the goal by clinching the NFC’s final playoff berth with a 27-24 overtime victory over divisional rivals. With the victory, San Francisco also swept the series of the season with Los Angeles defeating the Rams on both occasions they met.

Historical return

The 49ers took the win with a spectacular comeback that will go down in history after losing 17-0. Before finishing the first half,  Robbie Gould  scored a field goal from 42 yards to put the 49ers on the scoreboard. That was important because the 49ers began the third quarter with the ball in his hands and managed to score a touchdown with a carry of  Deebo Samuel 16 yards. They were only losing by one possession after Samuel’s score. Later, at the end of regular time, both teams were tied 24-24. In overtime, San Francisco managed to turn the scoreboard and take the lead for the first time in the game with a 24-yard field goal from Gould. The Rams had a chance to have the ball in overtime after the field goal 49ers but  Ambry Thomas he intercepted Matthew Stafford to secure the 49ers’ victory, enter the postseason and complete the historic comeback with a 27-24 overtime victory. It is the fourth time in the past 30 years that San Francisco has rebounded from a 17-point or more deficit to win. The most recent game where the 49ers accomplished something similar was on October 2, 2011, when they came back from a 20-point deficit to beat Philadelphia. In addition, San Francisco is the first team to defeat Rams head coach Sean McVay after falling behind at halftime. McVay is now 45-1 when his team has the lead at halftime.

Deebo Can Do Everything

Deebo Samuel  excelled on the ground, catching , and throwing the ball. Samuel caught four passes for 95 yards and carried the ball for 45 yards scoring a rushing touchdown. That was not all, Samuel also threw a touchdown pass of 24 yards to  Jauan Jennings . Samuel is the first non-quarterback player in franchise history to throw at least one touchdown pass and also score at least one running touchdown in a single game. Additionally, Samuel’s eight season rushing touchdowns are the most by a wide receiver in NFL history in a single season. In total there are 14 touchdowns for Samuel in the season, six receiving and the eight on the ground already mentioned.

Brandon Aiyuk  also contributed recorded six receptions for 107 yards. This is Aiyuk’s first game of the season registering more than 100 receiving yards and the third of his career.

Aerial And Ground Game

Jimmy Garoppolo  rallied after throwing two interceptions to lead the offensive series that tied the score 24-24 and sent the game overtime with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Jennings. In overtime Garoppolo led the offensive series that gave Gould the opportunity to score the field goal that took San Francisco to a 27-24 lead. Field goal that would end up being the victory thanks to Thomas’ interception over Stafford. Garoppolo finished by completing 23 of 32 passes for 316 yards and a touchdown. Elijah Mitchell He also helped the 49ers offense a lot, hauling the ball 21 times for 85 yards and getting crucial first downs with the running game. Mitchell finished the regular season with a total of 963 rushing yards, the most rushing yards in a season for a rookie in franchise history.

Ambry Thomas  recorded his first interception of his career and at a critical time of the match. In overtime the Rams had the ball to at least try to tie the game with a field goal or stay with the victory if they scored a touchdown but Thomas intercepted Stafford’s pass that was aimed at Odell Beckham Jr. and that interception ensured the victory. for San Francisco.
