Manchester United have been dealt a blow at a crucial point in the season after confirming that Argentine Lisandro Martinez will not play any more this term due to a foot injury sustained during Thursday’s Europa League match against Sevilla.

A little more than 24 hours after the Argentine Lizandro Martinez had to leave the Europa League match between Manchester United and Sevilla due to injury, the English team has confirmed what was feared, the defender will miss the rest of the season.

After undergoing the corresponding examinations, the Red Devils’ medical report revealed that Martinez suffered a fracture of the fifth metatarsal of the right foot that will leave him out of action just at a crucial moment of the campaign and he will not be able to return until the beginning of next season.

The 25-year-old center-back had made 45 appearances in the current season and was a world champion with the Argentine national team. Also, since his arrival at United at the beginning of the season from Ajax Amsterdam, he became a key player in the great season his team is having and one of the undisputed starters.

Manchester United’s coach, Erik ten Hag, had recognized after the Europa League match that Martinez’s situation did not look good at all, after the player came off after 86 minutes and had to be replaced by his compatriots Marcos Acuña and Gonzalo Montiel from Sevilla.

As if this were not complicated enough for the British team, the medical staff also confirmed the injury of French defender Raphael Varane, who was replaced by Harry Maguire and will be out for a few weeks due to physical problems.

In the current season, the Old Trafford team is in fourth place in the Premier League and for the moment has a direct place in the next edition of the Champions League. It is also a finalist of the FA Cup to be played on April 23 and remains in the race to advance to the semifinals of the Europa League if it defeats Sevilla.
