Fabio Pedretti, a 24-year-old Italian athlete, died of cardiac arrest while competing in the “Uno di Monticelli” night event, a 27-kilometer race in northern Italy, according to the organization of the competition on Sunday.
“Shattered and incredulous in the face of one of life’s impossible-to-explain tragedies, we lovingly support Fabio’s family and the glorious New Athletic Sulzano society (to which the athlete belonged)”, reads the organization’s statement.
Pedretti died on the night of this Saturday, on his 24th birthday, due to a cardiac arrest suffered five kilometers from the finish line. He was rescued immediately and taken to a nearby hospital, but doctors were unable to save his life.
