Costa Rican Joel Campbell scored a goal in Monterrey’s 2-1 win this Saturday over América on matchday nine of Clausura 2022.

The other goal of the Rayados was from the naturalized Mexican Argentine Rogelio Funes Mori. For the Eagles, the Spaniard Álvaro Fidalgo had put them ahead.

Monterrey and America came to this duel mired in a crisis as penultimate and last place in the tournament, respectively.

With the victory, the local team added nine points and jumped from seventeenth to tenth place; the visiting squad was left with six units as the worst in the contest.

During the week both teams fired their coaches; the Rayados to Javier Aguirre and the Eagles to the Argentine Santiago Solari.

In Aguirre’s place, Víctor Manuel Vucetich, a two-time league champion with the Rayados in 2009 and 2010, was his replacement. In the Águilas, the one chosen as interim coach was the Argentine Fernando Ortiz, in his first opportunity in the first division.

In the first half, América dominated for 15 minutes and put Monterrey on their field.

The Eagles took advantage at 33. The Chilean Diego Valdés charged a free kick towards the entrance to the Fidalgo area, who finished off with a header to celebrate the 0-1.

Monterrey tied at 37. Funes Mori finished off with his head, Ochoa saved and on the rebound Campbell shot powerfully and scored the 1-1.

In the second period the Eagles had the advantage; Henry Martín had a ball left with an open frame, but he flew his shot; a minute later, the Rayados player seven did not miss a rebound inside the area, he finished off from the right and sealed the 2-1.

A few hours earlier, the match between Querétaro and the champion, Atlas, at the La Corregidora stadium in Querétaro, located just over 200 kilometers from Mexico City, was suspended because fans of both teams invaded the field.

Atlas was leading 0-1 thanks to a goal from Argentine Julio Furch when the fans entered the field around the 60th minute.

Later Cruz Azul, led by Peruvian Juan Reynoso, will receive Puebla and Guadalajara will do the same against Santos Laguna.

Matchday nine kicked off on Friday with Toluca’s 0-1 away win over Necaxa with a goal from Brazilian Camilo Da Silva and León’s victory at the Juárez FC stadium, also 0-1 with a goal from Elías Hernández.
