Facebook lawsuit: you have less than a month to claim part of the $725 million dollar settlement

According to information from the $725 million lawsuit against Facebook, affected users have less than a month to claim their money back.

Months ago, Facebook agreed to a $725 million settlement of a class action lawsuit alleging a leak of personal data to third parties. Despite the time since this news broke, affected users only have less than a month left to claim some of their money.

In May, SoloDinero reported that Facebook faced multiple lawsuits by users, who claimed that the company improperly shared their data with third-party sources, such as advertisers and data brokers. The company, which now goes by the name Meta, denied any liability or wrongdoing under the settlement, however, it reached a monetary settlement of $725 million dollars to compensate its users for the harm they may have suffered.

The litigation began after Facebook became embroiled in a 2018 privacy scandal with Cambridge Analytica, the consulting firm that supported Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and allegedly mined user data from the site as part of an effort to profile voters.

Affected users have until August 25, 2023 to file a claim for their money. There are two ways to submit your claim: mail it in or submit it online.

To apply for the money corresponding to this claim, you must go to Facebook’s special claims site to complete the online form. You must complete the application by 11:59 p.m. on the night of August 25.

You can also print the claim and mail it to: Facebook Consumer Privacy User Profile Litigation, c/o Settlement Administrator, 1650 Arch Street, Suite 2210, Philadelphia, PA 19103. It is important that the postmark be postmarked by August 25.

In either case, the information you must enter is:

  • Your name
  • Your address
  • Your e-mail address
  • Your telephone number
  • Indicate whether you resided in the U.S. between May 24, 2007 and December 22, 2022, under penalty of perjury.
  • Indicate whether you were a Facebook user between May 24, 2007 and December 22, 2022, under penalty of perjury.
  • If you deleted your account during that period, the date range when you were a Facebook user
  • Your Facebook username
  • Your preferred payment service, such as PayPal, Venmo or prepaid MasterCard

We stress how important it is that you meet the following criteria: “If you were a Facebook user in the United States between May 24, 2007 and December 22, 2022, inclusive, you may be eligible for a cash payout,” the settlement details state. Remember, if you don’t meet this requirement, you can’t claim any money from the Facebook settlement.

After the Aug. 25 claim deadline, there is still a final settlement hearing, which is scheduled for Sept. 7, 2023 at 1 p. m. Pacific time. It is unclear exactly when payments will be issued, but the earliest they could be sent is after the September cutoff date.

It is also not possible to determine how much each user will receive, as it will depend on the number of people claiming settlement money. Some specialists have indicated that most of the payments could even be less than $100.
