American-Taiwanese director Justin Lin has just left his position as director on Fast X, but remains a producer all the same. While waiting for another director to take things in hand, the editorial staff of JV looks back on the career of the man who single-handedly directed half of the feature films in the Fast and Furious franchise.

Summary

But who is Justin Lin?

Born in Taipei in 1971, it was in California that he graduated from the School of Cinema and Television (UCLA) after having, very early on, tasted the pleasure of holding a camera. In 1996, he discovered the professional world of cinema for the first time as director of photography alongside director Quentin Lee on the film Flow. The duo continues on the film Shoppings for Fang, but Justin Lin, in parallel, begins to write and direct his first short films. It was not until 2003 that he made his first film. Better Luck Tomorrow tells the story of a group of young high school students who become criminals. Thanks to this film, his career is finally launched. He was offered more and more big projects like Annapolis in 2005 and the third installment of the Fast and Furious saga a year later.

A director with big ambitions

In the early 2000s, he got behind the wheel of the Fast & Furious saga and replaced John Singleton at short notice. Fast and Furious : Tokyo Drift tells the story of Sean Boswell, a motor racing enthusiast, who ends up in trouble with law enforcement. To avoid prison, he goes to Tokyo, but meets Twinkie who introduces him to drifting, an underground mechanical sport popular in Japan. He thus meets the title holder and tries to defeat him. The film received mixed reviews, but that didn’t stop Justin Lin from directing the next three films. the fourth Fast and Furious is not unanimous either, but revives the saga. At the same time, he directed several episodes of successful series such as True Detectiv or Scorpion.

The filmmaker also tries his luck in science fiction with the film Star Trek: Without Limits (2016), the sequel to Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek into Darkness (2013). It’s a source of pride for him as a fan of the original series. He then passes to the controls of Fast X, the tenth episode of the Fast & Furious saga. Speaking to Vin Diesel, who plays Dominic Toretto onscreen, he says that at his heart, Fast X will be the franchise’s best film to date and that filming “feels like the beginning of an epic ending.” However, he hastily left the shoot without leaving a successor. The director was also to take care of Fast and Furious 11, supposed to be the last opus of the franchise.

What do we know about Fast X?

It’s Vin Diesel, one of the main actors in the saga, who tells us the most about the film, especially through his elegance Instragam, we know that filming has already started and that the film should be released by May 2023. The American actor unsurprisingly takes over the role of Dominic Toretto opposite his rival Cipher, played by Charlize Theron. On the novelty side, Brie Larson (Captain Marvel) and Jason Momoa (Aquaman) join the cast. Alone Dwayne Johnson (The rock) will not be on the trip. Rumors speak of an argument between him and Vin Diesel.

Fast X’s story will pick up directly after the events of F9. In Fast and Furious 9, after recovering his son from the terrible Cipher, pilot Dominic Toretto comes across his brother Jakob (John Cena), missing for decades. Knowing Dom’s family, things quickly escalate, but the brothers eventually find common ground and join forces.
