MADRID, 15 (EUROPA PRESS)

The Government of Spain said this Friday to welcome with satisfaction that Greece and Turkey have announced that they will resume the exploratory talks on the territorial disputes in the Mediterranean Sea on January 25 after five years.

“Spain actively supports efforts to promote dialogue in the Eastern Mediterranean and trusts that these talks will allow progress in reducing tensions and stability in the area,” said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation in a release.

Along the same lines, the department headed by Arancha González Laya has indicated that it also hopes that the resumption of talks between the two countries “will contribute to generating shared prosperity in the region, all in line with the Conclusions of the European Council of December 2020 “.

This movement occurs when Turkey and the EU try to redirect the relationship to avoid applying economic sanctions to Ankara for its belligerence in the region. To this end, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu will travel to Brussels next week.

The 27 agreed in December to raise the tone against Turkey and increase the number of people sanctioned for oil exploration, work that is progressing in the Council, although, in turn, the EU left the door open to a negotiation with Ankara before returning to review the situation in March.
