The Lieutenant Governor of New York, Democrat Brian Benjamin, was arrested after surrendering this Tuesday to the federal authorities that He is accused of charges related to the financing of a campaign last yearbefore he was appointed second-in-command in the state, according to the media.

The accusation is the result of an investigation carried out by the FBI and the District Attorney for the southern district in Manhattan. according to the New York Times, which further indicates that authorities accuse him of conspiring to direct state funds to a Harlem real estate investor in exchange for thousands of dollars in illegal contributions to his unsuccessful 2021 campaign for comptroller of New York City.

The newspaper, which cites sources familiar with the matter, also indicates that Benjamin will appear this afternoon before the federal court for the official presentation of the charges.

He recalled that the lieutenant governor and former state senator recently indicated that he had been cooperating with investigators who had issued subpoenas in recent weeks to the Senate and people who had advised his campaign for comptroller.

Benjamin is the Democratic Party’s candidate for lieutenant governor in the June primary.
