John McAfee died more than seven months ago in prison, but his body is still frozen in a Barcelona morgue. His daughter and his ex-wife maintain a legal battle over the body and the cause of his death is still being investigated in the Spanish courts, although it was allegedly a suicide.
His end does not do justice to his life, which still continues to captivate his fans. “Usually with John there was smoke and mirrors,” says Kyle Sandler in an interview with MarketWatch.
McAfee ran for the presidential nomination in the United States in 2016 and Sandler was the one who managed his candidacy. Since 2017 he was in the Kansas prison for stealing two million dollars to investors while working on that bid.
McAfee had created the first commercial antivirus software in 1987 and founded McAfee Associates, which sold in 2010 for more than $7,663.
In 2012, he was charged in Belize as a suspect in the murder of Gregory Faull, who claimed to have killed the businessman’s dog. He fled the country and, after passing through other territories, ended up in Spain.
Imprisoned in Spain
Spanish authorities arrested him after being found guilty of fraud and money laundering, in addition to not filing tax returns for 5 years and hiding assets. The businessman was going to be extradited, but he died in the Brians 2 prison, in Sant Esteve de Sesrovires.
McAfee’s daughter’s lawyer expected the case to be closed in 2021, but the negotiations with the businessman’s ex-wife stalled as he could not contact her. “As far as I know, they haven’t done anything to the body,” Athanasiou tells MarketWatch. “It’s been there (in a freezer) all these months“, he concludes.
