US President Joe Biden said Thursday that passengers arriving in the United States will have to go through a quarantine after entering the country, as part of a series of decrees to contain the pandemic that include a tightening of the rules on the use of masks.

Biden made this announcement as part of his comprehensive strategy to contain the pandemic in the country, the nation in the world hardest hit by the number of deaths from covid-19.

“In addition to the use of masks, all those who travel to the United States from another country will have to take a test before getting on the plane and perform a quarantine when they arrive,” Biden said in a conference at the White House.

The requirement of a test had already been ordered by the previous government, but isolation was only a recommendation.

Biden explained that this measure is due to the new strains of the virus detected in other countries, at a time when in the United States there are more than 400,000 deaths from the pandemic, a figure that exceeds the number of American soldiers who died during World War II.

Biden indicated that he will sign a new order “to extend the requirements for the use of masks in interstate travel, in trains, planes and buses.”

These measures are part of a national strategy spelled out in a 200-page document, which includes a plan to accelerate the vaccination process, work to get students back to school, and regain the trust of public opinion, among other goals.

The president also wants Congress to approve a $1.9 trillion economic relief plan.
