He early elections in recent weeks it has been delayed in the Congress of the Republic after being rejected. However, according to the national survey on Ipsos Peru for America TV, the 70% Peruvians calls for the holding of general elections in 2023, after the wave of violence that occurred in the country, leaving 60 dead and hundreds injured.

While 22% consider that the electoral contests should be held in April 2024 and 7% in 2026, according to the aforementioned study. In other words, the minimum percentage agrees that President Dina Boluarte completes the five-year term.

However, so far Parliament has failed to reach an agreement after several rejections. The last draft presented by the executive called for the elections to take place on the second Sunday of October. However, the Constitution Commission sent the initiative to the archives, which is why it was not debated in plenary.

In this sense, lawmakers have not been able to reach a consensus two months after the start of the protests. To date, the second legislature has been extended until 17th February next.

On another side, 76% demand the resignation of President Boluarte and call elections. However, 20% indicate that it should continue at the Government Palace and 4% do not specify. As we recall, the president was sworn in until 2026, which caused rejection from various parts of the population.

In the case of his leadership, his disapproval has risen to 74% this month from January when it had 71%. Meanwhile, 18% support his leadership and 8% don’t elaborate.

The study also asked the population about the acceptance of the work of the legislature. On this occasion, 82% disapproved of the management of the Congress of the Republic, thus increasing by two percentage points. In January, they showed 80% disapproval.

Likewise, if President Boluarte resigns, the official who assumes his position is the President of the Congress of the Republic, Jose Williams Zapata. Given this, 57% indicate that they do not agree with the direction of the legislator in the Government Palace, but it should be another parliamentarian.

But, 25% say Williams Zapata should assume the presidency and 18% don’t specify. However, Boluarte has ruled out several that he will resign from office, in the same way that his ministers of state have ratified it on different occasions in conversations with the national and foreign press.

The latest to comment on a possible advance in the elections is the Minister of Education, Óscar Becerra, who assured that the Parliament will have to provide a way out of the political crisis that the country is going through.

“It’s not up to us to bring it forward, it’s not up to us, but what’s available, we’ll respect it. We have to learn how to be a country that plays by the rules. We like that a lot, if I don’t I don’t like the rule, it should be changed,” he said last Sunday.

For his part, the head of the Defense Portfolio, Jorge Chávez Cresta, also stressed that “the solution is in Congress”, and asked that they “listen to the country” so that they make a decision.
