President Biden in San Diego
Biden’s three-day tour of California and Nevada will begin in San Diego, where he will meet British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Monday. International leaders will discuss the 18-month Australia-UK-US nuclear partnership known as AUKUS.
The partnership, announced in 2021, gave Australia access to nuclear-powered submarines, which are stealthier and more capable than conventionally powered ships, as a counterbalance to China’s military buildup.
Australia is buying up to five Virginia-class ships under AUKUS, according to two people familiar with the deal who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to preview the plans. A future generation of submarines will be built in the UK and Australia with US technology and support.
Brandon Tsay has disarmed the man responsible for the shooting deaths of 11 people in Monterey Park in January.
The president was scheduled to arrive Monday morning at Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego. He was scheduled to speak around noon after meeting with other international leaders and leaving San Diego on Monday afternoon.
Biden will attend a Democratic National Committee reception Monday night in Rancho Santa Fe.
President Biden in Los Angeles
President Biden will visit the San Gabriel Valley community of Monterey Park on Tuesday to discuss efforts to reduce gun violence.
Eleven people died on January 21 in the city east of Los Angeles when a shooter opened fire in a ballroom during a night of Lunar New Year celebrations.
The Lunar New Year weekend promised to be filled with joy for the Monterey Park community.
The Monterey Park shooting was one of three mass shootings in January in California.
The shooter was then disarmed in an act of gallant heroism in the lobby of another ballroom. Brandon Tsay, who grabbed the gun from the shooter, was a guest at President Biden’s State of the Union address on February 7 and sat on the first lady’s podium during the speech.
In his speech, Biden renewed his call to ban military-style weapons.
Biden last visited the Los Angeles area in October.
