Uber Eats is the most expensive food delivery app in the United States, according to an analysis Self conducted with orders in 100 cities across the country through DoorDash, Uber Eats and Grubhub.
Uber Eats is one of the most popular food delivery service apps in the United States and the most expensive in the country, according to research by Self.
To find out how the price of food delivery changes when using different apps and how much more expensive it is to use these platforms than to get the food yourself, Self ordered from McDonald’s in the 100 largest metropolitan areas in the country on DoorDash, Uber Eats and Grubhub.
The research found that Uber Eats is the most expensive food delivery app in the United States with a cost of $41.16 per order, 51.3% more than buying directly from the restaurant.
Users of food delivery apps pay about 49.6% more than buying directly from a McDonald’s restaurant. GrubHub has a markup percentage of 48.7% and DoorDash 48.8%.
The payout percentage can be even higher at local independent restaurants than at McDonald’s. Self explains that this fast food chain is able to keep its profit margin lower than smaller companies.
The order placed by Self in the different applications were exactly the same. They included a quarter pound burger, a 10-piece McNugget meal, a regular Coke, and a side of regular fries.
Seattle, the city where it is more expensive to order food by application
Seattle charges residents more for fast food, the average cost of the sample meal via delivery apps was $55.35, 57% more than at the restaurant where it can be purchased for $23.53.
Virginia Beach has the highest markup percentage of 65% when comparing the price of buying directly from the restaurant to the full charges of food delivery service applications. The cost of the meal in the restaurant was $13.75 and in the delivery service it was $39.12.
“The cheapest option for food delivery is to pick it up yourself,” Self says. For those who use an app, it is likely to be the one with the best discount code at the time of ordering.
