The surroundings of Mar-a-Lago, the main residence of former President Trump are relatively calm, a handful of people a few hours ago protesting against this decision and supporting the former president.
Finally, a grand jury in New York has made the decision to indict former President Trump for an alleged payment of $130,000 to Stormy Daniels, a former porn actress, in exchange for his silence on an alleged extramarital affair. The payment was made by his former attorney, and now critic Michael Cohen.
The precise charges are still unknown. This happens while the ex-president is campaigning for the White House for the year 2024.
The former president reacted to this historic news, through a press release. Part says:
“I’m sure this witch hunt will backfire hugely on Biden. The American people have noticed what the Democrats on the radical left are doing. Everyone can see it.”
For her part, her lawyer, Alina Habba, stressed that the former president is the victim of a distorted system and that he will be exonerated.
“A former president, current presidential candidate and my friend Donald J. Trump is the victim of a warped and corrupt justice system. He will be exonerated.”
Governor Ron DeSantis also reacted, noting that the justice system has been militarized to advance a political agenda, which muddies the rule of law. He also noted that he will not assist in the former president’s extradition to New York given the questionable circumstances.
“The militarization of the justice system to advance a political agenda upsets the rule of law. It’s anti-American. The Soros-backed Manhattan District Attorney has consistently twisted the law to belittle serious crimes and excuse criminal misconduct.
However, he is now extending the law to target a political opponent. Florida will not assist with any extradition request given the questionable circumstances.”
Congressman Carlos Jiménez also opined: “Federal prosecutors had the same data on the same case and they didn’t lead to these charges, so now that it’s a non-federal prosecutor, who is from New York State, he can bring these charges again, this is a very dangerous step for this nation.
It must be stressed that the fact that he faces charges does not prevent former President Trump from continuing his race for the White House.
