NEW YORK – April kicks off this Saturday with rainy and stormy weather, and although upstate New York may see some downpours Friday evening. It is only the beginning of the rain which would arrive for Saturday.

More consistent bouts of rain are expected to develop overnight, with heavier showers on Saturday morning. We will have a midday break in the rain before additional sunlight, heat and the oncoming cold front combine to trigger thunderstorms. These thunderstorms could bring damaging winds of over 55 mph.

Isolated severe weather is possible in the New York area, with a threat of severe weather more likely in the northernmost and westernmost regions of the five boroughs. Winds are generally expected to be around 30-40 mph outside of thunderstorm locations, so it will be a windy day anyway.

What’s next in the forecast?

So after hitting the 60s and even the 70s on Saturday under sunny noon skies, Sunday will be much colder with highs struggling to hit the 50 degree mark. Temperatures will rise again during Holy Week.
