NEW YORK – New York City will once again celebrate Earth Day in a special way.

And it is this Saturday, April 22, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., that the annual event returns Open Streets: Car-Free Earth Day, a date on which more than 100 streets are closed to pedestrians only and without vehicles. The program is organized by the city’s Department of Transportation.

The programming includes activities, workshops and presentations in the streets open to the public. Dance and music, classes, games, educational workshops and more. Additionally, the show is performed in select locations across the city to promote activism and education around climate change, sustainability, and other relevant issues.

First release in 2016Open Streets: Car-Free Earth Day originally converted some Manhattan streets to public plazas and car-free streets for pedestrians, cyclists, and local businesses.

Open Streets Car Free Earth Day has expanded to locations across all five boroughs, connecting Open Streets, plazas and accessing more than 1,000 miles of New York City’s bike network. City agencies and community organizations offer roadside environmental programs to promote activism and education around climate change, sustainability and other relevant issues.

Free Citi Bike for 30 minutes

With the support of Lyft, Citi Bike will offer unlimited free 30-minute rides today. All cyclists can take advantage of the offer using promo code CARFREE23 in the Citi Bike app.

There are currently 31 locations across the city participating in Car-Free Earth Day. There are seven exclusive locations and twenty-four Open Street locations across the five boroughs.
