The republican governor Greg Abbot was re-elected to the post in the november elections in the state of Texas according to estimates from The Associated Press.

Abbott was running for his third term in office this election and was facing former Democratic congressman Beto O’Rourke.

Polls in recent months had consistently shown that Abbott lederaba; a recent average of RealClearPolitics polling before the election showed him ahead by more than 8 percentage points.

His Democratic challenger, Beto O’Rourke, has always faced an uphill climb. Texas hasn’t elected a Democratic governor in more than three decades. and Abbott is a formidable fundraiser in a state where Republicans have made gains with Latino voters.

The loss for O’Rourke, a former member of Congress, is the third. He has failed to win a higher office in four years, after his close but unsuccessful run for the Senate in 2018 and a run in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary.
