A new apartment building opened today in West Miami with the goal of providing more affordable housing for seniors.
The building will be called Ludlam Trail Towers and will consist of two county-owned towers. One built on this land, opposite Coral Way.
Construction begins on a new affordable apartment building in West Miami.
Alexis Mantecón, Urban Developer, MV Real Estate Holdings, says:
“We are going to build 64 units, which will be for the elderly and low-income people, over 55, and at the same time it will be part of Ludlam Trail, which will be a pedestrian walkway.”
A sort of open-air corridor along the old train lines from the Blue Lagoon district to Dadeland Mall.
District 6 Commissioner Kevin Marino Cabrera says:
“If we want to be a county and a global city like they say, the next level you have to have those things.”
The linear park was approved in 2018 by the county and promoted by former commissioner Rebeca Sosa.
Rebeca Sosa, former commissioner of Miami Dade, says:
“Today is such a special day for me, that’s why I’m here despite my illness to see the joy on people’s faces. They can live in a wonderful place, they can have a bridge that connects buildings, and they can walk around.”
The two 5-storey towers will offer one- and two-bedroom apartments for rent. They will be located southwest of 69th Avenue and 24th Street.
“And we designed the two buildings so that they are on both sides of Coral Way connected to the pedestrian walkway where residents can open their door and go straight to the Ludlam Trail,” says Mantecón.
It is a private sector-county effort that provided the land and an investment of over $11 million to address the need for affordable housing in the area.
“For single people it would be that they earn less than 54,000 and for a family of four it would be less than 78,000,” explains Marino Cabrera.
“One-bedroom units will start at around $700 to $700 and depending on the person’s income, the rent varies.”
For the developer, who excels in the construction of luxury residences, this type of affordable housing project is a first.
“We carry out the projects that we think are important and we have a vision that will change a region or people in this case,” says Mantecon.
The construction of these apartments will take about two years.
The county says information for interested parties will be available later on the county’s website.
