“Shingeki no Kyojin” has plot twists to annoy. In the end, who would have thought that the boy who started his story watching a titan devour his mother without hesitating twice, he was going to end up becoming a “devourer” of an unequaled class. The story of “Shingeki no Kyojin” is about how in a war there are no good guys or bad guys, how trying to understand each other is a better solution than shooting each other. Although Eren is really another role (Be careful with the spoilers you may find).
A childhood and adolescence marked by trauma
- The beginning of Shingeki no Kyojin is simply bestial: out of nowhere we see how hundreds, thousands of people are completely wiped out by gigantic beings called titans.
- Among all the deceased is Eren’s motherby which he swears that he will end the existence of each of the titans.
- Eren’s traumatic experience doesn’t end there: his father also dies, and it is only much later that he discovers that he is devouring him himself to inherit the Attack Titan..
- Being a bit older and part of the scout corps, Eren begins to realize the reality of being part of this force: death is just around the corner. It’s something he learns with the losses of characters like Mina or Marco.
Examples to follow: perseverance regardless of the consequences
- During his adolescence, Eren meets a series of people who give everything for everythingwho fear nothing to achieve their ends in this story called Shingeki no Kyojin.
- The first of these great examples is Annie Leonhart. As an initiate of Marley, she unleashes pure chaos in the form of the Female Titan. It’s like that Cold-blooded murder of dozens of Scout Corps memberseven those he once called companions.
- The situation is the same with Reiner and Bertolt: The ‘heaviest’ thing about these two is that they tell Eren himself that they are the armored and colossal titans. Indeed, these are two centerpieces of the murder of the protagonist’s mother. In this way, Eren keeps seeing the reality in which he finds himself knocked down.
Discover the truth about himself and the past of the titans
- Despite all the hatred Eren has for the titans at the start of Shingeki no Kyojin, the reality is only 1: he is also one of them. This is how he ends up discovering that he belongs to the line of eldiawho once ruled under the tyranny of titan power.
- Eventually subjugated by Marley and with historical figures such as King Karl Fritz accepting that they had to pay for the crimes of their ancestorsthe Eldians have been reduced to just over prisoners with a time bomb called ‘The Rumble’.
- Eren also discovers that his father, Grisha Jaeger, was part of a revolutionary group that sought to restore Eldia to greatness…quite the opposite of her half-brother Zeke Jaegerwhose objective was to carry out a peaceful genocide to end the Eldians.
- The moment that changes everything, however, is the one that reveals that It was Eren himself who forced all the events of Shingeki no Kyojin… even those before he was born.
The Attack Titan and Eren’s Fate
- He attack the titanswhich comes into Eren’s possession by inheritance from his father, possesses one of the most peculiar powers of all the changing titans: allows you to see the past and the future.
- How to do something? Well, receive ‘memories’ of all Titan carriersboth of those who are to come and of those who have already lived with the titan in their flesh.
- It’s like that the day Eren takes Historia by the hand In an official act of the members of the Corps of Explorations, he ends up seeing his fate very clearly.
- In touch with someone of royal blood As Historia, Eren receives a brutal wave of “memories” in which he can see the fate that awaits him, and most importantly: what he must do so that Armin, Mikasa and the Eldians can survive the coming disasters without continuing to bear the stigma of “demons”.
- Eren is clear, he knows that must trigger The Rumble, which will cause the people of Paradis and Marley to unite in a common effort: to stop him and end the threat of the titans. By holding hands in this way for a common cause, Eren will make his sacrifice serve to give life and peace to those he loves.
- Therefore, once he has full control of the Attack Titan, it is revealed that it is Eren himself who ends up forcing his father in the past to seize the powers of the Founding Titan. Indeed, from the future, Eren uses the influence of his person to bring his father, who at one point almost threw in the towel, to commit all the atrocities necessary for his plan to be viable when the time comes.
I think all of this paints a pretty clear picture of why Eren commits all the atrocities we see him commit. At some point in “Shingeki no Kyojin”, Eren is fully aware that only death awaits him, but what should be a feeling of negativity turns into a flame that burns brightly for the sake of his loved ones.. Eren isn’t evil in “Shingeki no Kyojin”, he’s a martyr for a greater good…as long as you don’t belong to that 80% of humanity that ends up destroying.
