Students at Indian High Springs High School launched a peaceful anti-racism protest at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The protest became “large and unruly when a group of students attempted to enter and disrupt a teacher’s classroom,” said Maria Garcia of the San Bernardino Unified School District.

The protest later escalated, “school staff intervened and were met by a small group of students who refused repeated requests to return to class,” the statement said.

Two students were taken to the school infirmary to receive “medical attention”, according to the statement, which added that “although pepper spray was deployed, no injuries were reported”.

Videos posted to social media show students running while battling the effects of pepper spray.

The school was on precautionary alert between 11:15 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. In addition, district police personnel will be on campus this Wednesday.

School staff invited students to “engage with each other” and with the guidelines in a “constructive and understanding” way.

“We discourage students from participating in non-peaceful protests as they disrupt teaching and learning and may have unintended negative consequences,” they reported.
