Police: Gunman opens fire on NYPD officers in Manhattan, suspect in custody

NEW YORK — A gunman shot multiple times at New York City police officers while they were in a marked police vehicle in the East Village on Thursday night, police say.

Officers were looking for a man who allegedly threatened people with a weapon in the Alphabet City neighborhood just before 8 p.m., police said. When officers saw the suspect, he turned and fired several shots at them on East 4th Street, between Avenue C and Avenue D.

All of their shots missed the officers, who then fired back. The suspect was also not hit by any gunshots, police said.

Officers were able to arrest the man shortly after, with charges pending against the suspect who have yet to be identified.

No other details were immediately available. An investigation is underway.
