A man who was filmed holding a machete and allegedly threatening another person at a Kendall mall was arrested Wednesday morning, police confirmed.
According to Miami-Dade police, it is 54-year-old Oscar Macías.
Macías was a second baseman for the Cuban national team who won the silver medal in Sydney in 2000. According to police records, he has a criminal record and was imprisoned for an armed robbery case. .
The incident happened in the 12700 block of 88th Street in Kendall shortly before 6:30 a.m.
At 6:26 a.m., Miami-Dade Police units attended the scene due to the subject walking through the parking lot armed with a machete. “Our officers were able to disarm the suspect and take him into custody without further incident,” police said.
Macías is now charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, violently resisting arrest and trespassing.
Surveillance video from one of the premises of the site shows the man with the machete approaching three other subjects. And at some point, it looks like he’s trying to hit one of the people who was there with the machete,
Video shared by the Only in Dade social media account showed a large police presence in the parking lot trying to grab the man’s machete. The police were able to take the machete from him, as the authorities said.
