NEW YORK — The New York Police Department is asking people to avoid a Brooklyn intersection while it investigates a shooting involving an officer, two senior police officials said.

Senior officials said police responded to a call about a possible burglary on Lewis Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant around 1.15pm Thursday and found the suspect on the second floor of a house near Hancock Street.

The suspect allegedly pointed a gun at them, and the two officers returned fire, hitting the individual, senior police officials said. The suspect was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition.

It is not immediately known how many times the person was shot.

Neither officer was injured, although both were taken to hospital for treatment for tinnitus or ringing in the ears.

Senior NYPD officials said a firearm was recovered from the scene. No other details were immediately available.
