NEW YORK — A crew member working on a fuel barge in the strait Kill Van Kull of Staten Island somehow came between his ship and another early Thursday, triggering an intense rescue effort that ultimately failed, authorities say.
The New York Police Department and New York Fire Department responded to the strait Kill Van Kulla tidal strait between Richmond Terrace and Bayonne, New Jersey, after receiving a report of the man shortly after 6 a.m.
Police divers managed to pull the man out of the water, and our sister network’s helicopter NBC 4 New York was overhead as the NYPD boat returned to shore with the victim. Footage showed a flurry of activity around him as crews removed the man from the boat and put him on a stretcher, where emergency medical services personnel took over and transported him to hospital for possible cardiac arrest.
He was pronounced dead in a hospital later that day.
The investigation is ongoing.
