The county clerk’s office began mailing absentee ballots on Monday to registered voters in Los Angeles City Council’s District Six for a special election that will replace Nury Martinez.

The special election is set for April 4., with a second round scheduled for June 27 if necessary. The winner will complete the remainder of Martinez’s term, which ends in December 2024.

District Six, which includes the central and eastern parts of the San Fernando Valley, is overseen by a nonvoting administrator, the city’s chief legislative analyst, Sharon Tso.

Hours before the announcement of Martinez’s resignation from the Los Angeles Council for the 6th District, people were calling for his resignation.

A non-voting custodian does not hold a council seat, but oversees the council office to ensure the district provides constituent services and other basic functions.

Martínez, the former chairman of the board, resigned for participating in a conversation racist leak in October 2021.

The board voted to hold a special election rather than appoint an alternate board member for the remainder of Martinez’s term.

seven candidates will appear on the ballot:

  • Isaac Kim, small business owner;
  • Imelda Padilla, Community Relations Manager;
  • Rose Grigoryan, social activist/journalist;
  • Marisa Alcarez, Director of Environmental Policy;
  • Antoinette Scully, community organizer/parent;
  • Douglas Dagoberto Sierra, Parent/Business Consultant; And
  • Marco Santanadirector of a non-profit housing organization.

The special election could cost the city up to $7.65 million, according to an estimate from the city clerk’s office.
