The Unified District of Los Angeles (LAUSD) fights for contingency plans as tens of thousands of workers prepare to leave workforcing all schools to close temporarily from Tuesday.

While Superintendent Alberto Carvalho told a news conference on Wednesday he was “optimistic” the district could reach a resolution, Local 99, which represents about 30,000 workers, including bus drivers , guards and other food service workers, said the strike was necessary. to send the right message.

“Enough disrespect,” Local 99 CEO Max Arias said at a rally Wednesday. “As parents and LAUSD workers, we know that a strike would be a sacrifice. But we also know that our families have been sacrificing themselves for too long on starvation wages.

600,000 students in the Los Angeles school district have been deprived of lessons for three days – the union which represents around 30,000 workers has chosen to go on strike – the announcement was made in Grand Park where thousands of people turned out gathered to support them, including members of the teachers’ union.

More than 35,000 LAUSD teachers, represented by UTLA, a teachers’ union, also plan to join the three-day sympathy strike.

As it makes its last ditch effort to avert the strike, the district appears to be gearing up to help families during the three-day school closure.

That’s what you need to know.

Education

The district has prepared education and teaching kits for all students, including those with special needs and those learning English, according to Carvalho. Parent help kits are also ready for distribution, the superintendent said.

Food

Even though schools are closed, LAUSD students, many of whom come from households at or below the poverty line, could still access free healthy meals.

The district is finalizing plans in partnership with community organizations to distribute food. But the service will not be available at all school sites, according to Carvalho.

The current plan is that food pickup would be possible at about 60 locations in Los Angeles. The food would come from LAUSD warehouses, so the district would have to partner with other organizations to facilitate distribution.

child care

LAUSD welcomes partnering with entities to provide some form of childcare or “supervised supervised custody” to students whose parents do not have the ability to work from home or find other childcare options of children.

Details on possible options were not immediately available.

While the district will have another bargaining session with the teachers’ union on Friday, the non-teaching staff union has not agreed on a date for the next bargaining, second oak.
